Dual knock of nature devastated lives of tribes in Sudhagad (Raigad Dist.)

You guessed it right, our help reached there too!

Raigad, May 24: Amidst fight for survival during COVID-19 crisis, the coastal belt of Maharashtra had also one more war to face i.e. onslaught by fierce Nisarga Cyclone. When the whole world is struggling against the Chinese virus, the poor tribal staying in and around Sudhagad Fort in Raigad district of Maharashtra were devastated by the Nisarga Cyclone. Literally, the roof on the top of their head had blown away. These people had to take shelter in the primary school in that region. Already, these people were struggling with their basic needs due to lack of livelihood options in COVID lockdown and to add on the troubles this cyclone shattered their houses.

On knowing about the cyclone, the first to reach these people were a sister organization Trekshitiz, as they working here for many years. Trekshitiz, the organisation of nature lovers, avid trekkers, and history buffs, has been providing books to the kids in these areas, conducting regular cultural events. They have got a library in this area, also if needed they teach the tribal students here. They have been conducting treks in this area and are involved in the restoration work about the fort. Vivekanand Seva Mandal and Trekshitiz has strong historical, friendly ties and we have decided to join our hands together in providing immediate relief by supplying 15 days groceries to the 164 tribal families of the villages near Sudhagadh.

Trekshitiz volunteers did a survey of the affected villages in the Sudhagad area and started immediate relief work for these needy tribal populaces. VSM provided food grains and basic hygiene material to them. Commencement of all the work started with providing food grains that were bought from the local shop there and distributed by the teachers of the school to all the needy. (Those who would like to donate for this cause can donate here and confirm their donation details here.)

In the past, as novel partners in restoration work of Sudhagadh fort, the same tribal villagers teamed-up with Trekshitiz in restoration of this huge fort. This huge fort was imagined to be one of the alternatives while shifting capital from Rajgad by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and has many monuments like temples, pant-sachiv wada, etc which are also damaged by Nisarga cyclone. Hence, as their social and emotional responsibility, Trekshitiz felt necessity to immediately jump in the rescue and rehabilitation work at the site and VSM felt its responsibility to support the villagers suffering from double wrath of the nature.

Rahul Meshram, President Trekshitiz said, “We decided to go personally visit this area as after the cyclone we were unable to reach them. Initially we decided to hand them food as due to COVID- 19 many had not been earning for the last two months. First name came to our mind to arrange for the grocery was Vivekanand Seva Mandal (VSM) as we are also working with them in Corona hunger relief work and our relations date back to over two decades.”

The tribals were to have new roofs over their houses before full onset of the monsoons, Trekshitiz along with the assistance of Mr. Nishad Gandhi-run M/s. Roofs & Ceilings Pvt. Ltd. provided metal and plastic roof sheets to those households whose roofs and walls were damaged.
