Work in Rural area

Vivekanand Seva Mandal strives hard to practice Swami Vivekanand’s principles of Work is worship and Service for humanity is worship to God, through its various service activities. The work has mainly two dimensions; one is to contribute our efforts for the upliftment of our rural brothers and the other, equally important, is to motivate other individuals to contribute to this activity.

Vivekanand Seva Mandal is working in co-ordination with Vanavasi Kalyan Aashram, which is a nationwide organization working in the tribal areas. Vanavasi Kalyan Aashram has started a number of hostels in various rural places where all the facilities are provided free of cost for the students. Every year our group supports one of these hostels in the form of books & stationary, uniforms, food etc.

One of the activity also involves the medical assistance to various organizations engaged in providing basic medical facility to these remote areas. It includes, contacting various city hospitals for providing medical assistance to rural people, arranging visits of the city doctors to these remote areas for the regular medical checkup, motivating the pharmaceutical industries to donate drugs for this cause. We have taken the responsibility to supply medicines for " Arogya Rakshak Yojana " (Project: Life Guard) of Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram. Under this project, training is given to local villagers and medicines are supplied to them.

Since rural sector of our society is still deprived of the most basic needs, it is a need of time to motivate young generation to work for the betterment of the rural people. Hence, we regularly arrange visits to these areas. In these visits, we can realize the problems of this socially neglected area. We get a chance to talk with them, share their experiences and analyse their difficulties. The group also visits the hostels started by Vanavasi Kalyan Aashram.

During our visits - Hrunmochan bhet (visit to remote tribal village), we try to create an awareness about education and medical health-care among rural people through our interactions. Thus, such activity provides unique opportunity for the students to get acquainted with the hardship of the life of rural brothers and to extend a helping hand to them.

On Bhavbeej, Diwali Pharal Yogana is conducted. Our members visit tribal area and distribute saris amongst tribal sisters and distribute pharal to tribal people.

Technology development

The group members are always prepared to take the challenges especially when they are technical in nature.It is in fact our main long term objective to come up with an appropriate technology for the rural area. We have worked in co-ordination with other NGOs and organizations like GRA (Group for Rural Activities) at IIT Bombay. Since, most of our rural problems are socio-technical in nature, we are sure that our joint efforts will surely lead us to success.

Srujan Sohala:

This is function organised every year for networking of all VSM members. Talented members get chance to show their talents in music, drama and other areas. This also aims including family of the member in the social cause.
