Projects - Vihigaon
One of the major activities of Vivekanand Seva Mandal is ”Project : We are the Builders”. Under this project, we have adopted a village called Vihigaon. Vihigaon,is a small adivasi village having 12 padas, is situated at about 15 km from Kasara, in Shahapur taluka, Dist. Thane in Maharashtra. Since 1994, members of the group visit there every weekend. The basic aim of our Development Program is to develop a cordial relationship with the villagers, understand their problems and assist them in solving their problems using our expertise.
Problems Anticipated:
Through the frequent visits, the group members studied various problems the village is facing. The major one are as under :
Water crisis
Health and medical care
Education
The village having population of 1600, suffers badly from the dearth of water, especially during the 4 months of summer. Villagers have to strive hard to fetch water from the remote wells. Not to mention of water for cattle and agricultural purposes. It is due to this water crisis that the villagers could not implement various government schemes like tree plantation.
In spite of good rain, people still suffer from shortage of water because of lack of storage facility. Also, uncertainty of rain cuts down their crop earnings and they are left with no choice but to spend their days in utter hardships working on hard jobs like road construction or to migrate with the whole family to the nearest city.
Thus, the various ways of their income are unstable and lead them to a life full of hardships.

The condition of the education in the village is also not different. The School facility is available only from first to fourth standard. After the Fourth standard, students have to go to the places like Wakadpada, Kasara for further education, for which most of the times they are reluctant since they can’t afford it or they have to support their family in earning their daily hood.
Conversation through play, casual chat with these children show their talent very well. The group members understand that there is a lack of facility and encouragement towards education.
The ultimate result of all these problems is of course the continuation of the vicious circle of poverty, uncertainty and an unending hardship.

On the front of medical health care, the situation is equally worse.
First of all, there are no medical facilities available in the village and the villagers have to go to the nearby town. Another important fact is carelessness and superstitions on the part of villagers which make them suffer from serious situations.
Many of them are still not aware of the medical facilities at all and of course, a large number of villagers cannot afford them.

The group has recently taken up a project aiming at raising the awareness and concern for the environment among the students and diverting the collective strength of its members to do something constructive in this area.
